Today, I got my first eye roll from my 6 1/2 year old daughter. Really? Is it starting already? I was trying to convince my son who just turned 4 that he needed to lay down for a nap. He is definitely done with naps. I’m not. I have always made my kids nap for probably a longer time than most. Is that bad? But, he truly needs it. And, he still sleeps from 7:30 pm until 7 am everyday. So, it isn’t affecting his sleep. HOWEVER, if he skips his nap, then all hell breaks lose around 7pm at our house. He is hysterical. Not wanting to eat dinner. And the rest of us are silently counting the minutes seconds until he is in bed. So, that must mean he still needs it. Yep. I’m going with that.
But, back to my daughter. So, while the above interaction was going on of trying to get the four year old convinced he needs a nap, I told her to go play quietly in the playroom until her brothers were in bed. Insert eye roll. Where do they learn to do the eye roll? Oh wait. Maybe I do that? Like possibly at my husband? No. Couldn’t be.
It has to be from school. I’ve been good at blaming stuff on public schooling lately. Like how my daughter doesn’t eat at school because she only gets 15 minutes. Yeah, that bugs me. Especially when I find out the teacher sometimes uses a “working lunch” with the kids even after I told her I was concerned about how little she eats at school. Does, she really think a 6 year old can eat her lunch and do school work at the same time?????!!
Or, how I emailed the principal two days ago about a concern with the lack of communication between myself and people at that school. Hmmm. Can’t wait to see how long it takes him to respond. But, I’m almost positive she learned eye rolling at school. Don’t you think?
I know the feeling! My kids are 8 & 9, and I’ve been getting the eye rolls for a few years now. It shocked me the first time – I knew it would happen eventually, but I naively thought it wouldn’t happen until the teen years. Perhaps they are born with the instinct?
I’m sorry, my jaw hit my kitchen table when I read that the kids only get 15 minutes for lunch. This is for elementary school? Have they lost their minds?? Please tell me the time “saved” is going toward them getting their yah-yahs out during extra recess time. Right?? RIGHT??? Because if you tell me it’s going toward test-prep, I might scream…
They get 30 minutes total. 15 minutes to eat, 15 minutes to do recess. The problem is that I have witnessed that it takes 5 minutes to get the kids down there, and then the lunch monitors are rushing them to go outside! Just got an email from her teacher saying that she sets a timer on the table for 15 minutes from when they sit down so that they get a full 15 minutes to eat because she doesn’t let the monitors push the kids out sooner. Thank goodness. But, having a “working lunch” meant she stayed in the classroom and worked on something and ate. Ummm. I made it clear that she was no longer allowed to do that. And don’t even get me started on the kids that buy their lunch and have to wait in line during that 15 minutes!!!
That is, pretty much, the saddest thing I’ve ever read. Simply awful.
A “working lunch”?!?!?! For 6-year-olds?!?!? Ugghhh. I just hung up from a 20 minute conversation with my best friend about this – for the second time today. We need to figure out where to send our 3 1/2 year olds (mine also still naps – same deal as your fella) and all of the 4-year-old programs are full day and part of the public school system. The schools here are lacking in pretty much every except attitude and bad influence and my kid doesn’t need any help in those subjects.
Wow. That 15 minutes for lunch blows my mind. I was thinking the half hour my kindergartener gets was too skimpy. (She likes to talk too much and then ends up with not enough time to eat.) They also get at least a half hour of recess that does not include the designated physical education (yes, they have PE for kindergarten where I live) hour. I’m boggling.
They get away with it by saying it is 30 but then 15 minutes of it is a “lunch recess” insert MY eye roll.
LOL I know the feeling! I remember the first time I got an eye roll, along with “whatever.” I couldn’t believe it. When did our sweet little girls turn into snotty mini-teenagers? At least it doesn’t last forever. 🙂
I’ve never heard of a working lunch either! I’d roll my eyes and throw a tantrum at that! 🙂
