Much like the first time your first baby sleeps through the night and you wake up, heart pounding, running to their bedside to see if they’re still alive, kids do surprise us every single day. And, sometimes, their actions are SO surprising, it feels like a modern day miracle.
Here are a few modern day miracles that make moms surprised, overwhelmed, and think they might actually survive motherhood after all.
When your kid stops seeing you as their personal trash can, and uses the actual trash can.
When your teen utters the miraculous words, “Is there anything I can do to help, mom?”
When you finally potty train your very last child it definitely feels like a miracle.
When your kid takes his dishes to the sink without being asked. Or does anything without being asked.
When your toddler plays happily by himself and isn’t looking at a screen.
When your kid actually hurries when you say “We’re in a hurry!”
When you remember to send something to school with your child that the teacher asked for. By the deadline.
You do a craft with the kids and don’t hate it.
When your whole house is clean at the exact same time.
When you walk into your bathroom and don’t smell a faint scent of pee.
When no one has thrown up in a month.
You pee in peace.
When you make it through an entire day without yelling.
When your toddler actually picks up a toy without flopping down and crying about it first.
When your kids are in bed and asleep and no one is asking for anything, it feels like a miracle every. single. time.
When you remember to pull meat out of the freezer and have a plan for dinner.
When you can hear yourself think.
You ask your kids to help you cook, and it’s not a disaster.
When it’s quiet, and no one is doing something naughty.
You go on vacation and no one gets sick.
When your kids read books to each other happily.
When there is no crying during the homework hour.
You take your kids out to do something fun, and they say thank you after.
When your car is clean enough to give someone else a ride somewhere.
You have a birthday party for your kid plus 10 more and everyone survives.
When your house smells normal.
When a toy is put back in the correct place when you give it to a kid to put away.
When you finally don’t have to help a kid buckle himself in because they can all do it themselves.
The first time you go on a family vacation that they’ll actually remember and find yourself relaxing.
The first time you and your husband have a night out after having kids, and you don’t worry.
When you can have a conversation with your spouse with kids present, it definitely feels miraculous.
When your toddler goes to bed and doesn’t fight it.
When your three year old is willing to try a new food without bribery.
When you wake up one day and realize, all of your kids are in school.
When you eat or drink your favorite meal at the right temperature.
When you get an unsolicited hug from your teen.
When the laundry gets washed, fold, and put away all in the same day.
Anytime you sleep through the night as a parent.
When you eat out and no one has to poop in the middle of dinner.
When you stay out past your kids’ bedtime for the first time, and no one has a meltdown.
When you realize, you’re going to all make it out alive. Because maybe you’ll all actually make it through this whole family experience and not kill each other.
